Creation of an Endowment for the John Crano Memorial Lecture

For the past 10 years the Crano lectures, usually at the April meeting, have been a highlight of our year. These lectures are in memory of John Crano, who was instrumental in developing the photochromics for PPG's polycarbonate lenses. John was an active member of the Akron Section for many years. Up to now, PPG, Inc. has funded the lectureship on a year-by-year basis. Earlier this year, section members, led by Henry Stevens, have had discussions with Barry Vangemert of PPG, Inc. about how to perpetuate this lectureship in honor of John Crano.

Now, it is my pleasure to anounce the creation of the John Crano Memorial Lecture Endowment. The endowment has been initialized by gifts from Transitions, Inc. ($10,000), and the PPG Collegium ($5,000). In addtion, PPG, Inc. will match gifts from its current employees. The Akron Section will contribute $5,000 to the endowment and will match gifts by individual Section members. If you would like to contribute, your gift will be matched by the Section. Make out your check payable to the Akron Section, mark it "for Crano Endowment", and sent it to our treasurer: Dr. Chris Ziegler, Treasurer The Akron Section ACS Department of Chemistry The University of Akron Akron OH 44325-3601

David Perry, Section Chair
